The mortality rate from impacted foreign bodies inthe trachea or esophagus was formerly very high, about 80 percentdying after surgical efforts for removal. Cases of metallic bodies in the eye were seldom diagnosed untilnot only the injured eye was lost, but the other eye was destroyedthrough sympathetic ophthalmia.
