Bring a charged ball near enough to the elec-troscope to affect it; now hold an insulated needle against the ball,pointing it toward the disk of the electroscope, and it will be foundthat the electroscope will be affected through a longer distance thanwhen no needle is used. CONDENSERS. The simplest form of electricalcondenser is the Leyden jar.This consists of a glass jar (Fig.18), coated on the inner andouter side to a certain heightwith tin-foil. The inside coat-ing is connected to a metallic rodthat passes through the cork andterminates in a ball about threeinches above the cork. Such ajar may be charged by ground-ing the outside coating and con-necting the ball and inner coat-ing to the prime conductor of anactive static machine. If the jaris removed and the outside andinside coatings are brought neartogether by means of a wire ordischarge rod, a series of sparkswill pass between the dischargewire and the ball.
