Phoenix is scheduled to launch Aug. 3 from Launch Pad 17-A at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Phoenix will land in icy soils near the north polar permanent ice cap of Mars and explore the history of the water in these soils and any associated rocks, while monitoring polar climate. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- - In the Space Assembly and Encapsulation Facility 2 (SAEF-2), an overhead crane lowers the Comet Nucleus Tour (CONTOUR) spacecraft toward the upper stage of a Boeing Delta II rocket. The two will be mated for launch. CONTOUR will provide the first detailed look into the heart of a comet -- the nucleus. Flying as close as 60 miles (100 kilometers) to at least two comets, the spacecraft will take the sharpest pictures yet of a nucleus while analyzing the gas and dust that surround these rocky, icy building blocks of the solar system. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – At Astrotech Space Operations in Titusville, Fla., the range of motion is tested on the high-gain antenna for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. The orbiter will carry seven instruments to provide scientists with detailed maps of the lunar surface and enhance our understanding of the moon's topography, lighting conditions, mineralogical composition and natural resources. Information gleaned from LRO will be used to select safe landing sites, determine locations for future lunar outposts and help mitigate radiation dangers to astronauts. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – The Ocean Surface Topography Mission, or OSTM/Jason 2, spacecraft is being weighed before fueling, encapsulation and transfer to the launch pad. The launch of the OSTM/Jason 2 aboard a Delta II rocket is scheduled for Friday, June 20, from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The launch window extends from 12:46 a.m. to 12:55 a.m. PDT. The satellite will be placed in an 830-mile-high orbit at an inclination of 66 degrees after separating from the Delta II 55 minutes after liftoff. The five primary science instruments of the Ocean Surface Topography Mission aboard the Jason 2 spacecraft are dedicated to measuring ocean surface height. These measurements will be used to evaluate and forecast climate changes and improve weather forecasting. The results also are expected to help forecasters better predict hurricane intensity. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Personnel from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory JPL in California double-check instrument performance on NASA's International Space Station-RapidScat as testing of its rotating radar antenna is conducted in the Space Station Processing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. From left are RapidScat project manager John Wirth and JPL flight technician Kieran McKay. Built at JPL, the radar scatterometer is the first scientific Earth-observing instrument designed to operate from the exterior of the space station. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Engineers at Astrotech Space Operations in Titusville, Fla., begin work to lower the high-gain antenna on the Solar Dynamics Observatory. Lowering the antenna will provide access to the battery compartment for installation of the flight battery. SDO is the first space weather research network mission in NASA's Living With a Star Program. The spacecraft's long-term measurements will give solar scientists in-depth information about changes in the sun's magnetic field and insight into how they affect Earth. In preparation for its anticipated November launch, engineers will perform a battery of comprehensive tests to ensure SDO can withstand the stresses and vibrations of the launch itself, as well as what it will encounter in the space environment after launch. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - In bay 2 of the Orbiter Processing Facility, workers are installing the Multifunction Electronic Display Subsystem - a state-of-the-art “glass cockpit” - on the orbiter Endeavour. The “bunny suits” they are wearing are clean room attire required for anyone coming in close proximity to the orbiter. The full-color, flat-panel MEDS upgrade improves crew/orbiter interaction with easy-to-read, graphic portrayals of key flight indicators like attitude display and mach speed.
