Boney's Return from Elba (NAPOLEON 153)

description

Summary

This drawing depicts the startled reaction of the European rulers when Napoleon escapes from Elba. They are shown in a tailor's workshop, cutting out their territory from the map of Europe. Napoleon enters, his appearance implying his demonic nature (horn in his forehead, cloven hoofed feet, a black heart hanging around his neck). Next to him is the imperial crown, pierced by the Hand of Justice. All the rulers are dismayed at his entrance, but most especially Louis XVIII, the Pope, and Talleyrand.
