VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, CALIF. - The L-1011 carrier aircraft is in flight with its cargo underneath of the Pegasus launch vehicle and SciSat-1 spacecraft. The SciSat-1 weighs approximately 330 pounds and after launch will be placed in a 400-mile-high polar orbit to investigate processes that control the distribution of ozone in the upper atmosphere. The data from the satellite will provide Canadian and international scientists with improved measurements relating to global ozone processes and help policymakers assess existing environmental policy and develop protective measures for improving the health of our atmosphere, preventing further ozone depletion. The mission is designed to last two years.

The Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle Mystic (DSRV 1) is carefully loaded onto a Russian-built An-124 Condor (Antonov) by Sailors assigned to the US Navy's Deep Submergence Unit (DSU) and the aircraft's crew. The An-124 is owned and operated by the Volga-Dnepr Group based in Russia. The Mystic and 13 members of her crew are being flown to the Republic of Korea to participate in Exercise Pacific Reach. The exercise improves submarine rescue capabilities and fosters a familiarization between different nations with submarine rescue techniques

U.S. Army personnel, dressed in combat gear with weapons, from the 3/15 Infantry, 24th Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, wait in a grassy area to board a helicopter at Port au Prince International Airport, Haiti during Operation Uphold Democracy. Soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division lend a hand in loading an M-551 Sheridan light tank aboard a 436th Military Airlift Wing C-5B Galaxy aircraft. The U.S. Air Force Airlift Center is conducting tests to certify the airdrop, formation-flying and low-level flight capabilities of Galaxy aircraft. Earlier tests were suspended in 1973 when wing-strength problems were discovered in Galaxy aircraft

A fire truck stands by at the arrival of a 60th Military Airlift Wing C-5A Galaxy aircraft transporting members of the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG). UNTAG will perform peacekeeping duties and monitor the November 1989 elections and independence of Namibia
