The report of the wonderful discoveries of the pot-makerof Saintes had long before been circulated by the influentialnoblemen who had patronised his early researches, and to whomhe owed this crowning favour. His fame had preceded himwhen he came to settle in Paris. He was reputed to be a manof universal knowledge and a propounder of new doctrines in allthe branches of natural science. In that capacity he deliveredcourses of lectures, for which he charged one crown—a largesum for the times—and which were attended by the most dis-tinguished men in science, literature, and art. The treatises and memoirs he published in 1563 and 1580contributed to spread far and wide the reputation he hadacquired in the select circle of his friends. In literary merit,either for pathos, choice of expression or clearness of descrip-tion, many pages of these volumes equal the works of the bestprose writers of the period. PLATE III.PALISSY WARE. PALISSY WARE. 35 When the end came, his affairs had taken a turn for theworse; success and happiness had forsaken the old master; it wasa sad and terrible end. Up to the last years of his life hispatrons had been powerful enough to preserve him from thepersecutions directed against his co-religionists. But in 1590 when he was eighty years of age—his diatribes against all existing powers, his denunciation of prevailing errorsand crimes, had become so aggressive as to be considered adanger to the State. He was incarcerated in the Bastille,where he is said to have died after two years of captivity. PaHssy left a good number of successors and imitators. Hisso-called secrets were in everybodys hands. His sons, Nicholasand Mathurin, who had assisted him during his hfe, continuedto practise the art of their father. At Avon, near Fontainebleau,in the latter part of the sixteenth century, several potters weremaking vessels and figures of a kind absolutely similar to thosemade by PaHssy, and
