Burton of Cleveland, today told the Senate unemployment committee that unemployment in his city has risen from 89,1000 last October 15 to 175,000 on January 6 of this year. Employment increased by 7,000,000, Washington, D.C. Oct. 3. John W. O'Leary, chairman of a special committee on employment of the United States Chamber of Commerce, reported to the directors of the chamber, now meeting in Washington today, that employment of worker in industry and private business has increased 7,000,000 from the low point of the depression. 1,500,000 drop in employment, Senate Committee told by government labor statistics chief. Washington, D.C., Jan. 4. Armed with many charts and his head full of figures, Isador Lubin, Chief of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, today estimated before the Special Senate Committee unemployment, that 1,500,000 persons lost industrial jobs between October 15, 1937 and December 15 of the same year. In urging an expansion of the Federal Works Program and Social Security Aids, WPA Administrator Harry Hopkins told the Senate Unemployment and Relief Committee today that about 18,000,000 men, women, and children in 6,000,000 households were receiving public assistance at present as compared to a peak of 27,000,000 persons on the winter of 1933-34. Biggers, Administrator of the Unemployment Census, announced that he had called a conference at the White House on Monday to formulate plans for the first unemployment census ever conducted in the United States. The Harris & Ewing, Inc. Collection of photographic negatives includes glass and film negatives taken by Harris & Ewing, Inc., which provide excellent coverage of Washington people, events, and architecture, during the period 1905-1945. Harris & Ewing, Inc., gave its collection of negatives to the Library in 1955. The Library retained about 50,000 news photographs and 20,000 studio portraits of notable people. Approximately 28,000 negatives have been processed and are available online. (About 42,000 negatives still need to be indexed.)
