Turkey vulture, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, 2015.
Summary
The turkey vulture (Cathartes aura) is the most widespread of the New World vultures, from southern Canada to the southern most tip of South America. Like all New World vultures, it isn't closely related to Old World vultures of Europe, Africa and Asia. Instead, these groups strongly resemble each other because of convergent evolution (i.e., independent evolution of similar features in species of different lineages).
