White-rumped sandpiper (Calidris fuscicollis), Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve, 2015.
Summary
The white-rumped sandpiper is rare at the preserve but may be seen in spring and fall. Small shorebirds can be very difficult to distinguish from one another and are collectively called 'peeps' or 'stints'. One of the best ID features for the white-rumped sandpiper is the long wings that extend beyond the tail when the bird is on the ground (as you can see in the picture). Only one other sandpiper (Baird's sandpiper) has this feature but can be distinguished by the lack of a white rump.
