prairie dog which had been shot at,but had got into its burrow, the ominous rattle ofthe reptile was heard within. Twenty years had elapsed since that time, andmany changes had taken place in the conditions of.animal life upon these plains. I thrust my stickdown various holes but there were no rattlesnakesin them. I afterwards heard that in these districtsthe reptiles, which had been so numerous, had dis-appeared. Another group of these village communi-ties which I examined was placed to the south ofthe Platte. Although it covered a comparativelysmall area it was more fully tenanted and the dwell-ings were closer together, each mound almost touch-ing its neighbour. One of the young occupiers ofthis village had been captured and tamed by asquatter living near the settlement in which I wasthen stopping. As it rarely happens that the habitsof these marmots can be regularly observed, thiscreatures actions were noticed with great curiosity. It was the daily habit of this prairie dog to sit
