ive feet inheight. The most important are those platformearthworks at each end of the inclosure upon whichmay have been placed the principal communal build-ings, or the houses of the Caciques. There was alsoa mound of an exceptional shape, situated in the in-terior which, from its position, may have been in-tended for purposes similar to those that existedwithin the embankments of Fort Ancient in Ohio. When Carrera was President of Guatemala hewished to know for what object these mounds werebuilt, and he therefore gave orders that one of thelargest of them should be thoroughly examined. Itwas ascertained, contrary to expectation, that it wasnot a burial place. The only thing found in it wasa large and well carved granite grindstone of thesame shape as those at present used by the Indiansfor grinding maize.
