x parallel tracksspaced 17 ft. apart on centers, each.The floor throughout will be of ce-ment, as will the sides of the pitsand the steps leading into them.This floor will be 7 ins. thick, re-inforced by steel rods or other ap-proved construction, and will besupported by round columns ofcast iron 5 ins. in diameter. Thepits will be 4 ft. 2 ins. deep, andwill be drained to 4-in. x 8-in. gut-ters leading to the sewer connec-tions. The foundations of the floorsupporting columns will be of con-crete in two courses, each 1 ft. deepand 2 ft. wide. Fig. 4 illustratesthe pit room in cross section. Anelectric traveling crane will servethis room. Access can be had tothe pits by four sets of parallelstairways, two of which are locatedat the center and one at each endof every pit. Three pathways, each6 ft. wide, are provided for transitacross the pit room. It has notbeen settled yet whether the cranerunway will be supported on steelI-beams or reinforced concrete.
