INNER racE OF MmmT The magnet is C shaped and has an internal coil, asshown in the engraving. It is made C shaped arid not aring so that it can be taken off the axle. The method of operation is as follows: Both brake andcontroller are worked by the same handle. Suppose acar to be running with the current on and a stop is to bemade. The handle is thrown to the off position, andwhen it strikes the off position it throws a switch, whichcuts off the trolley current and makes connections, so 468 (^l/i^li\aiWa^j^vIe\/

DETAIL OF BRAKE. that when the handle is put on the first point of the con-troller, the motor, brake magnets and about eighteen ohmsresistance are placed in series with each other. Themotor builds up immediately, and sends a currentthrough the brake magnets and resistance. The less theresistance in circuit the harder the brake is applied, sothat this can be regulated entirely by the controllerhandle. When the controller is connected as a brake, and is thrown back to the off position, it trips a switch, which throws in the trolley current and makes it againan ordinary controller. In other words, ever) other timethe handle is on the off position it becomes wired as abrake and every other time as a controller. The sim-plicity and practical efficiency of this arrangement is tooobvious to need comment. With this brake it is impossible to slip the wheels formore than an instant, as the moment the wheels stop themotor stops generating current. The stops made withthis brake are remarkably quick
