the enamels are stated to be painted. M.Labarte, however, justly considers that they must be executed by floatingtransparent enamels over a delicate bas-relief; the eifeet of which muchresembles painting. This fine work was executed by Ugolino Veri, agoldsmith of Siena, in 1338. The enamels represent on one side thehistory of the Miracle of Bolsena, which the reliquary was constructed toenshrine, and, on the other, the Passion of Our Lord. A very quaint example of Oriental work is shown in a brass ewer,damascened with silver. The original is preserved in the British Museum.Some few specimens of this kind have been found with names of sultansand towns, showing that they were principally manufactured in Mesopo-tamia, and that they are often as early as the Xlllth century. There are necessarily great difficulties in translating a work like M. La-bartes. Notwithstanding these obstacles, the transla-tion on the whole appears satisfactory. We could have wished, however,that the notes added by the translator had been distinguished from those ofthe author, as is usually done. That on Art Mobilier (p. 2), containssome curious matter, but the words do not occur in that form in M. Labarteswork, the original phrase being Objcts dArt Mobiliers.
