Substitute materials. Timber connectors. Foot bridges, like this 100-foot span wood arch bridge are sometimes necessary for walkways in many cities and towns. These structures are made with the aid of the timber connector to insure the required strength

Substitute materials. Timber connectors. Use of wood in the construction of Army chapels is shown here, one of 570 similar structures erected since last fall. All of them were built with wood trusses like these or with glued laminated wood arches, saving many tons of structural steel for more strategic purposes. New methods for timber joints have made it possible to reduce the amount of material needed for trusses and other load-bearing members

Substitute materials. Timber connectors. Constructed of wood reinforced with timber connectors, this 166 foot wide clear span mold loft building has been duplicated many times in shipyards on the Pacific, Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. The unobstructed floor of a mold loft is a giant drawing board. The many parts of merchant ships, such as plates, ribs, and bulk-heads are drawn on the floor in full size. From these drawings templates are made and from the templates the actual parts are fabricated

Substitute materials. Timber connectors. Prefabricated timber prepared for timber connectors. Timber connectors are pressed steel rings or malleable iron plates and provide a larger supporting area than that attached by bolts, customarily used in joining timber

Shipbuilding. "Liberty" ships. This maze of rolling cranes, at a large Eastern shipyard is a typical scene in many large shipyards at work on ships for Uncle Sam's Navy and merchant fleet. Stocks of material are piled up for the cranes to take to vessels under construction so there is no delay in production while waiting for sections or materials. All parts are prefabricated in this huge Eastern plant which formerly turned out freight cars. The completed sections are then carried six miles to the ways on flat cars.
