Shipbuilding. "Liberty" ships. This maze of rolling cranes, at a large Eastern shipyard is a typical scene in many large shipyards at work on ships for Uncle Sam's Navy and merchant fleet. Stocks of material are piled up for the cranes to take to vessels under construction so there is no delay in production while waiting for sections or materials. All parts are prefabricated in this huge Eastern plant which formerly turned out freight cars. The completed sections are then carried six miles to the ways on flat cars. Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyards Inc., Baltimore, Maryland

A girl riveting machine operator at the Douglas Aircraft Company plant joins sections of wing ribs to reinforce the inner wing assemblies of B-17F heavy bombers, Long Beach, Calif. Better known as the "Flying Fortress," the B-17F bomber is a later model of the B-17, which distinguished itself in action in the south Pacific, over Germany and elsewhere. It is a long range, high altitude, heavy bomber, with a crew of seven to nine men -- and with armament sufficient to defend itself on daylight missions

Production. Pratt and Whitney airplane engines. A new Pratt and Whitney airplane motor running on a test stand at a large Eastern plant. Before being shipped to one or another of our aircraft factories, the engine must demonstrate its ability to meet rigid Air Force requirements. Pratt and Whitney Aircraft

Tennessee Valley Authority. Watts Bar Dam hydroelectric plant. One of four tube-generating units which produce electric power at TVA's Watts Bar steam plant. This plant will supplement the big hydroelectric installations at Watts Bar Dam, which has an authorized output of 90,000 kilowatts, and a possible ultimate of 150,000 kilowatts. Each of the four big turbo-generators in the steam plant is rated at 60,000 kilowatts

Conversion. Floor waxer plant. Normally used in manufacture of floor waxers, as shown here, this five-spindle drill press is now used full-time on defense orders for which this small Eastern plant is under subcontract. Floorola Products Inc., York, Pennsylvania

General Motors. Chevroletfabrik. Smide av vevaxel till Chevrolet. Den enorma tre tons hammaren används uteslutande för detta ändamål. Metod ger vevaxlarna en tät och enhetlig struktur.

Shipbuilding. "Liberty" ships. Wooden templates are used as patterns for the laying out of a number of steel plates. These workers are transferring the templates designs, or patterns, to steel, to be used in ships under construction at a large Eastern shipyard. All parts are prefabricated in this huge Eastern plant which formerly turned out freight cars. The completed sections are then carried six miles to the ways on flat cars.
