Original caption: Astronaut Virgil I. Grissom, 35, prepares for centrifuge tests at the U.S. Navy's center at Johnsville, Pennsylvania during April of this year. These tests were conducted to determine the reactions of the astronaut under similar G conditions he might encounter during a space flight. Grissom is one of three astronauts chosen for the first manned suborbital flight in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Project Mercury.
