No.1348—An Appraisal of Power Used on Farm*in the United States, by C. D. Kinsman,July, 1925. 172 Pacific Service Magazine California agriculture offers an outstand-ing and unparalleled example of the use ofpower, more especially electric. But 18per cent of the power used on the farms inthe Golden State is furnished by work ani-mals, and of the remainder electric motorsdeliver 42 per cent. An increased efficiencyin production has resulted, largely due tuthe extensive use of mechanical and elec-trical energy. The average load factor, that is the percentage that the useful workobtained is of full load continuous opera-tion, is less than 4 per cent for all farmpower in the United States; it is over6 per cent for all farm power in California, and over 13 per cent for the electric powerused on farms in this state. The averagecost per horsepower hour for all farmpower in the United States is 19 cents; inCalifornia, due largely to the low cost ofelectric power, this average cost is 9 cents.

Electricity plays an important part on dairyfarms today. It operates the milking machine, circulates cold water or brine through thecoolers, and there is now being developed anelectric sterilizer for dairy utensils. In some dairies portable motors are used tooperate ensilage cutters and hay choppers. The average crop value per acre of im-proved land in the United States is $29; inCalifornia, $53. A measure of progress in agriculture isthe amount of power controlled per farmworker. The California farm operatorutilizes over four times as much power onhis farm as the average farmer in thiscountry, and his net income is larger thanthat of the farmer in any other state andover twice the average for the UnitedStates. It is difficult to visualize the 554,000,000horse power hours per year, the amount ofelectric energy used in California agricul-ture. This is more energy than that an-nually required for operating all of theseeding and planting machinery on thefarms in the United States. It is m
