LH2 Liquid Separator Tank Delivery

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – In an environmental enclosure in processing facility 1555 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, twin segments of a Pegasus payload fairing for NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission are cleaned and inspected before the spacecraft is encapsulated. The fairing will protect the spacecraft from the heat and aerodynamic pressure generated during ascent to orbit aboard an Orbital Sciences Pegasus XL rocket in March. Once processing of the rocket and spacecraft are completed at Vandenberg, they will be flown aboard an L-1011 carrier aircraft to the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site on the Pacific Ocean’s Kwajalein Atoll for launch. NuSTAR, a high-energy x-ray telescope, will conduct a census for black holes, map radioactive material in young supernovae remnants, and study the origins of cosmic rays and the extreme physics around collapsed stars. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- At Launch Complex 17-A, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the second part of the fairing for the Genesis spacecraft arrives at the top of the gantry. The fairing will encapsulate the spacecraft to protect it during launch aboard a Delta II rocket. Genesis will be on a journey to capture samples of the ions and elements in the solar wind and return them to Earth for scientists to use to determine the exact composition of the Sun and the solar system’s origin. NASA’s Genesis project in managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Lockheed Martin Astronautics built the Genesis spacecraft for NASA in Denver, Colo. GOES-R Centaur Stage Transport from HIF to ASOC

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The first stage of the Atlas V rocket that will carry the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite, TDRS-K, into orbit arrives at the hangar at the Atlas Spaceflight Operations Center at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida to begin processing. Launch of the TDRS-K on the Atlas V rocket is planned for January 2013 from Space Launch Complex 41. The TDRS-K spacecraft is part of the next-generation series in the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System, a constellation of space-based communication satellites providing tracking, telemetry, command and high-bandwidth data return services. VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – Technicians move a solid rocket motor to a different transporter inside the Solid Rocket Motor Processing Facility at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The motor will be attached to the United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket slated to launch NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2, or OCO-2, spacecraft in July 2014. OCO-2 will collect precise global measurements of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere. Scientists will analyze this data to improve our understanding of the natural processes and human activities that regulate the abundance and distribution of this important atmospheric gas. Summary

The ship was documented in two locations. Dry dock photos were taken in Norfolk, Virginia, and in-water photos were taken while berthed at Canton Marine Terminal in Baltimore, Maryland.

Significance: As stated in the N.S. Savannah National Historic Landmark nomination, the ship is significant as the world's first application of nuclear power to a commercial ship; and as the structure most associated with President Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace initiative. The combination passenger/cargo ship demonstrated to the world the safe and reliable operation of this new technology, resulted in the establishing of a nuclear ship training program for civilian crew members, established procedures for commercial nuclear ships to enter domestic and foreign ports, and identified a series of issues which would require resolution in a second generation of commercial nuclear ships (disputes over crew pay scales, liability, and commercial viability). In addition to its important role in maritime history, Savannah served a unique public relations role as a floating exhibit on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

In recognition of the significance of this vessel, the Savannah has been designated a National Historic Landmark, an International Mechanical Engineering Landmark, and a Nuclear Engineering Landmark.
