r from the narrative that our pioneer was a man ofunusual endowment and force of character. Governedby strong religious convictions, his influence was mostsalutary and left a powerful impress on his family and onthe community in which he dwelt. He presents aninspiring example of lofty patriotism, of civic virtue, ofearnest, useful and successful activities, inspired andregulated by the principles of religion. His will, whichwas made during his last sickness, illustrates his publicspirit by the bequests therein for charitable and pioususes, for the benefit of the church and school house; suchbequests being less common in those days than in moderntimes. He and his wife are buried in the old graveyardat Stillwater, near the graves of his father-in-law, Johan l6 PUBLIC SERVICES OF CASPER SCHAEFFER. Peter Bernhardt, and his family. The following inscrip-tion appears upon his headstone: C S. In memory of Casper Shaver, who departed this life Dec. the 7th, 1784, in the 72 year of his age. 02

WILL OF CASPER SHAVER. In the name of God, Amen, I, Casper Shaver, of Upper Hardwick,in the county of Sussex, in the Province of New Jersey, Yeoman,being sick and in a low state of health but of perfect understanding,mind and memory, and considering the uncertain continuance of mylife and the many dangers and accidents it is liable to. and beingdesirous to leave the small estate which God has been pleased tobless me with, in my family with as much peace and union as maybe, and that I may have no cares of this world to entangle me at mygoing out of it, I do make this my last will and testament in manneras followeth, viz : and first, I resign my soul to the most MercifulGod that made it in hopes thro the alone merits of my blessedLord and Saviour Jesus Christ to have a joyful resurrection to lifeeternal in heaven. And my body I commit to the grave to bedecently buried at the discretion of my executors hereinafter named.And as for my temporal goods 1 give, devise and dispose of asfollowsmemoirsreminisce00schae
