CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- A Falcon 9 rocket with a Dragon capsule secured atop is reflected in the rainwater standing on the surface of the pad of Space Launch Complex 40 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida following its lift into a vertical position. Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, built both the rocket and capsule for NASA's first Commercial Resupply Services, or CRS-1, mission to the International Space Station. The vertical lift was complete at 1 p.m. EDT. SpaceX CRS-1 is an important step toward making America’s microgravity research program self-sufficient by providing a way to deliver and return significant amounts of cargo, including science experiments, to and from the orbiting laboratory. Launch is scheduled for 8:35 p.m. EDT on Oct. 7. NASA has contracted for 12 commercial resupply flights from SpaceX and eight from the Orbital Sciences Corp. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, a crawler-transporter moves NASA's new mobile launcher (ML) support structure from a construction site, north of the Vehicle Assembly Building (background), to the Mobile Launcher east park site. The base of the launcher is lighter than space shuttle mobile launcher platforms so the crawler-transporter can pick up the heavier load of the tower and a taller rocket. Once there, the ML can be outfitted with ground support equipment, such as umbilicals and access arms, for future rocket launches. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Media representatives participate in a Now and Future Tour at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Here, they make a stop at the Launch Pad 39B, which is being restructured for future use. Its new design will feature a "clean pad" for rockets to come with their own launcher, making it more versatile for a number of vehicles. Other stops along the tour included Orbiter Processing Facility-2 (OPF-2) and the Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF). OPF-2 is where shuttle Discovery is being prepared for future public display at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va. The SLF's runway could be used for private companies and government agencies to host a diversity of launch systems, including orbital and suborbital flights. Experts at Bureau of Standards study effect of corrosive soils on specimens of pipe. Washington, D.C., Aug. 8. Of interest to home builders the country over is the study being made by experts at the National Bureau of Standards of the effect of corrosive soils on pipes and protective materials. Samples of pipe which have been buried for four years in fifteen soils differing widely in their characteristics, are being tested. Included are several varieties of ferrous materials as well as copper, brass, and bronze. Soldered and brazed joints, protective materials, and pipe made of a composition of cement and asbestos are also represented. Walter Johnson, of the Bureau, is pictured removing graphitic corrosion from cast iron with an air-driven tool. The corrosion products are too hard to be removed with a brush or by chemical treatment, 8/8/38

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- In the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility, an overhead crane moves the heat shield toward a platform at left. The heat shield was removed from the Phoenix Mars Lander spacecraft at right. The Phoenix mission is the first project in NASA's first openly competed program of Mars Scout missions. Phoenix will land in icy soils near the north polar permanent ice cap of Mars and explore the history of the water in these soils and any associated rocks, while monitoring polar climate. Landing is planned in May 2008 on arctic ground where a mission currently in orbit, Mars Odyssey, has detected high concentrations of ice just beneath the top layer of soil. It will serve as NASA's first exploration of a potential modern habitat on Mars and open the door to a renewed search for carbon-bearing compounds, last attempted with NASA’s Viking missions in the 1970s. A stereo color camera and a weather station will study the surrounding environment while the other instruments check excavated soil samples for water, organic chemicals and conditions that could indicate whether the site was ever hospitable to life. Microscopes can reveal features as small as one one-thousandth the width of a human hair.
