KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Shawn McCollough, principal of Gainesville Elementary School, a NASA Explorer School (NES) in Gainesville, Ga., and a teacher sign a Memorandum of Understanding between KSC and the school for the NES program. Schools from across the country are eligible to apply online for an opportunity to partner with NASA in a program designed to bring engaging mathematics, science and technology learning to educators, students and families. Melvin joined Jim Jennings, deputy associate administrator for Institutions and Asset Management at NASA Headquarters, on the visit to the school to share the new vision for space exploration with the next generation of explorers. Melvin talked about the importance of teamwork and what it takes for mission success. Also visiting was KSC Deputy Director Woodrow Whitlow Jr., who talked with students about our destiny as explorers, NASA’s stepping stone approach to exploring Earth, the Moon, Mars and beyond, how space impacts our lives, and how people and machines rely on each other in space. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - KSC Deputy Director Dr. Woodrow Whitlow Jr. shares the new vision for space exploration with the students, the next generation of explorers, at Howard Bishop Middle School in Gainesville, Fla. Whitlow talked about our destiny as explorers, NASA’s stepping stone approach to exploring Earth, the Moon, Mars and beyond, how space impacts our lives, and how people and machines rely on each other in space. The presentation also included a downlink from the International Space Station for students to ask questions of the Expedition 8 crew, Commander Michael Foale and Flight Engineer Alexander Kaleri. Howard Bishop Middle School is one of 50 nationwide (four in Florida) in the NASA Explorer Schools (NES) Program. NES establishes a three-year partnership between NASA and 50 NASA Explorer Schools teams, consisting of teachers and education administrators from diverse communities nationwide. KSC-04pd0558

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Gregg Buckingham, with KSC's Center for Space Education, addresses participants in this year's NASA MarsPort Engineering Design Student Competition 2002 conference at the KSC Visitor Complex, organized by the Florida Space Grant Consortium. Students and faculty from the nation's universities converged at Kennedy for the MarsPort Competition, presenting papers on engineering trade studies to design optimal configurations for a MarsPort Deployable Greenhouse for operation on the surface of Mars. Judges in the competition were from KSC, Dynamac Corporation and Florida Institute of Technology. The winning team's innovative ideas will be used by NASA to evaluate and study other engineering trade concepts. Also featured at the opening ceremony were Dr. Sam Durrance, FSGC director and former astronaut, and Dr. Gary Stutte, plant scientist, Dynamac Corporation. KSC-02pd0659

Appearing before the Senate Unemployment and Relief Committee today, William Hodson, New York City Commissioner of Welfare, suggested modification of the Unemployment Insurance Act so that the basic payment to an unemployed person will provide an allowance for his dependents. Hodson pointed out that in New York the maximum unemployed benefit averages between $10 and $12 a week, with no regard as to whether the family contains two or five persons, 3/19/38

She said Clara, 11 years old, averages 75 pounds a day. Picked 101 pounds yesterday, earning $1.25 (they are picking now for another farmer). She carries 40 pounds in the bag. Velma, 14 years, picks 125 pounds. Has picked over 200 pounds in a day. Children go to Flower Mound School, District 48 while living here, but they are itinerant, renting a small farm of 10 acres now. "We move about a good deal" mother said.
