Vid sockenstämman den 14 oktober 1849 beslutats att en ny kyrkobyggnad skulle uppföras i Gärdserum. Ritningar till kyrkan gjordes av den rikskände arkitekten och professorn vid konstakademien i Stockholm, Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander. Att kyrkorådet i lilla Gärdserum kunde knyta en sådan kraft till kyrkobygget kan rimligtvis föras till att byggnadskommitténs ordförande var friherren och kammarjunkaren Seth Adelsvärd.Inte bara arkitekten var synnerligt erkänd. Byggmästaren Jonas Jonsson hade vid tiden över 30 års erfarenhet av kyrkobyggen i Tjust med omnejd. Tillsammans skapade de Sveriges först uppförda nygotiska byggnad, optimal i proportionerna, raffinerad och påfallande smäcker.
