CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- This panoramic image shows space shuttle Endeavour in the transfer aisle of the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where workers have attached an overhead crane to the spacecraft. The crane will lift Endeavour into a high bay where it will be attached to its external fuel tank and solid rocket boosters for its final mission, STS-134. Endeavour and its STS-134 crew will deliver the Express Logistics Carrier-3, Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a high-pressure gas tank, additional spare parts for Dextre and micrometeoroid debris shields to the International Space Station. STS085-726-082 - STS-085 - Payload bay views with MFD visible

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Seen through the open bay door of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, space shuttle Discovery is being prepared for its move to Orbiter Processing Facility-1 (OPF-1). Discovery is switching places with shuttle Endeavour which has been undergoing decommissioning activities in OPF-1. Both shuttles will stop briefly outside OPF-3 for a "nose-to-nose" photo opportunity. Discovery then will be rolled into OPF-1 and Endeavour into the VAB. In OPF-1, Discovery will undergo further preparations for public display at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia. Endeavour will be stored in the VAB until October when it will be moved into OPF-2 for further work to get it ready for public display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - In Orbiter Processing Facility Bay 1 at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, three replica shuttle main engines RSMEs have been installed on the space shuttle Atlantis. In this wide-angle view, the orbiter is surrounded by work platforms allowing access to all areas of the spacecraft. Three RSMEs were installed on Atlantis. The replicas were built in the Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne engine shop at KSC to replace the space shuttle main engines SSMEs which will be placed in storage to support NASA's Space Launch System currently under development. The RSME installation is part of the Space Shuttle Program’s transition and retirement processing of the space shuttle fleet. A groundbreaking was held Jan. 18, 2012 for Atlantis’ future home, a 65,000-square-foot exhibit hall in Shuttle Plaza at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – With the massive doors of the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida in the background, space shuttle Endeavour is being towed from the VAB to Orbiter Processing Facility-2. Shuttle Endeavour will remain in OPF-2 so that the orbiter maneuvering system (OMS) pods and forward reaction control system can be installed. Technicians also will offload water and Freon gas from lines located in Endeavour’s midbody. The work is part of Endeavour’s transition and retirement processing. The spacecraft is being prepared for public display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Endeavour flew 25 missions, spent 299 days in space, orbited Earth 4,671 times and traveled 122, 883, 151 miles over the course of its 19-year career. The Space Shuttle program was the United States government's manned launch vehicle program from 1981 to 2011, administered by NASA and officially beginning in 1972. The Space Shuttle system—composed of an orbiter launched with two reusable solid rocket boosters and a disposable external fuel tank— carried up to eight astronauts and up to 50,000 lb (23,000 kg) of payload into low Earth orbit (LEO). When its mission was complete, the orbiter would re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and lands as a glider. Although the concept had been explored since the late 1960s, the program formally commenced in 1972 and was the focus of NASA's manned operations after the final Apollo and Skylab flights in the mid-1970s. It started with the launch of the first shuttle Columbia on April 12, 1981, on STS-1. and finished with its last mission, STS-135 flown by Atlantis, in July 2011.
