description

Summary

Installation Photos, 3/4 front view from below. F-111B in Ames 40x80 Foot Wind Tunnel. The General Dynamics/Grumman F-111B was a long-range carrier-based interceptor aircraft that was planned to be a follow-on to the F-4 Phantom II. The F-111B was developed in the 1960s by General Dynamics in conjunction with Grumman for the United States Navy (USN) as part of the joint Tactical Fighter Experimental (TFX) with the United States Air Force (USAF) to produce a common fighter for the services that could perform a variety of missions. It incorporated innovations such as variable-geometry wings, afterburning turbofan engines, and a long-range radar and missile weapons system.

A M35A2 2 1/2-ton cargo truck pulls a support vehicle up the starboard loading ramp of the United States Naval Ship (USNS) Gordon. USNS Gordon is the first United States Navy (USN) Large, Medium-Speed Roll-on/Roll-off Ships, or LMSR, cargo vessel. USNS Gordon is a former commercial tanker and underwent conversion to United States Navy Military Sealift Command specifications to make it ideal for the loading, transport and unloading of United States Army and United States Marine Corps combat equipment. It is more than 300 yards long and has a storage capacity of more than 300,000 square feet. The ship is named in honor of MASTER Sergeant Gary I. Gordon, US Army, who was posthumously...

Pilots of the 527th Aggressor Squadron prepare to taxi their F-5E Tiger II aircraft down the runway during Exercise RED STAR'87. The annual exercise, which is hosted by the 527th Aggressor Squadron, employs F-5 Tiger II aircraft and F-111 aircraft to simulate Soviet formations and tactics, thereby providing realistic training for US Air Force F-15 Eagle aircraft pilots
