Downy woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens), Fire Island National Seashore, 2015.
Summary
The downy woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker in North America. Distinguish the nearly-identical downy and hairy woodpeckers: the hairy woodpecker's bill is about equal length to its head while the downy woodpecker's bill is shorter than its head. The downy woodpecker also has black spots on its white tail feathers.
