Robert French - Down by the Sea
Summary
The title in our catalogue is "Castle, Throne Room, Dublin City, Co. Dublin", which is obviously incorrect. I am not even sure that this is a Lawrence shot, at lease not a typical Lawrence shot. I will list it as it is in the system - and review later when we see what transpires during the course of your deliberations...The overriding consensus is that this is the strand at the Murrough, by Wicklow Town. Perhaps a few yards (and a few years) separated from a reverse view we had previously ( ...nlireland/25340935660/ ) . In terms of subject, it seems likely that this image captures an early 20th century crowd enjoying the Wicklow Regatta ( https://www.independent.ie/regionals/wicklowpeople/news/hunt-begins-for-regatta-queen-27862447.html ) (first run in 1878)....Photographer: Robert French..Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000313414 ) ..Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Perhaps c.1900+..NLI Ref: L_ROY_00368 ( vtls000325965 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
