Baltimore, Md.: Have you no troops in Pennsylvania and Maryland whichcan promptly be thrown into Wheeling by the Pennsylvaniarailroad? The enemy seems to march more rapidly than wemove by rail. H. W. Halleck, General-in-Chief. Washington, April 29. 1863. Major-General Schenck, Baltimore, Md.: Two companies have gone from Sandusky to Wheeling,and Governor Todd has also sent, it is said, some others to thesame place. The enemys raid is variously estimated at from1,500 to 4,000. You have 40,000 under your command. Please say if you have any infor-mation, and if force will be sent on, if there. We have noforce in the State, and yon could send troops,before we couldorganize any. A. G. Curtin, Governor of Pennsylvania. But President Lincoln, with his usual sagacity, sums upthe situation in a nutshell, and replies: Hon. A. G. Ciirtin: I do not think the people of Pennsylvania should beuneasy about an invasion. Doubtless a small force of theenemy is flourishing about in the northern part of Virginiaon the screwhorn principle, on purpose to divert us inanother quarter. I believe it is nothing more.
