The enemy seems to march more rapidly than wemove by rail. H. W. Halleck, General-in-Chief. Washington, April 29, 1863. Major-General Schenck, Baltimore, Md.: Two companies ha\e gone from Sandusky to Wheeling, and Go\ernor Todd has also sent, it is said, some others to thesame place. The enemys raid is variously estimated at from1,500 to 4,000. You have 40,000 under your command. Ifyou cannot concentrate enough to meet the enemy, it doesnot argue well for \our militarv dispositions. H. W. Halleck, General-in-Chief.
