d therapeutics, to be concluded in 20-lessons. Fully illustrated. LESSOX 15. Leaden Box With Diaphrams. We are now able to obtain body picturesin less time than formerly, owing to thefact that we have better and more power-ful apparatus and that some of our tubeshave a device by means of which the vac-uum in a tube can be lowered or againraised at will. But the so-called self-regu-lating tubes on the market are not allperfect and do not give satisfaction al-ways. We have not yet been able to securea method for keeping the tube at a uniformvacuum, and the fluoroscopic examinationshave to be still depended upon in determin-ing the condition of each individual tuberas already stated. Besides we have to shutout the diffused x-rays to get satisfactionin our work. If a low vacuum tube showsthe bones of the hand. arm. or leg plainly, the result may be negative if we endeavorto look through the body; and on the otherhand with the high vacuum tube we maypenetrate the heavy parts of the body, but

In thefirst case the penetrative power was notbufficient, and in the other too great witha strongly diffused reflection. To select atube of proper vacuum, increase of defini-tion without lowering the penetrationshould be our aim. It is well known that more difficultiesare met with in skiagraphing thick bodiesthan thin ones. A principal reason for this care must be taken not to illuminate agreater part of the body than appears ab-solutely necessary to bring the entire plateused under exposure. By imagining thetube to be at a distance of 60 centimetersa hole of only half the size of the platewill be necessary to direct the operatingcone of the rays upon the plate with theirfull effect. According to the instructionsof Walter, Kohl, in Chemnitz, Germany, constructed the first leaden box, illustrated
