The underlying principle of thesingle-impulsc method is briefly as follows:In the methods knowni hitherto, the current flowing through the primary wind-ing of the induction coil is suddenly interrupted after reaching its maximumintensity, i.e. at the moment when the iron core of the induction coil hasattained maximum saturation, and the result of the sudden disappearance ofthe flux is an inductive kick in the secondary winding. The force of thisinductive kick is considerably greater when the single-impulse methodis used inasmuch as the flux in the iron core does not merely drop from itsmaximum to zero but from a positive to a negative maximum. In con-sequence, the induction in the secondary wdnding must be particularlystrong, and the X-ray tube gives a flash of more than double the intensitythat would be obtained with a simple in
