For this reason they may be usedfor bandages of the head, hand, or arm in patients wThoare treated as walking cases, and who object to the con-spicuousness of a white bandage (Figs. 97 and 98). The Rubber Bandage.—This bandage, which was in-troduced to the profession by Dr. Martin, of Boston, ismade from a strip of rubber-sheeting, from one inch tofour inches in width and from three to five yards in SPECIAL BANDAGES. 95 length, which, for convenience of application, is rolledinto a cylinder. It may be employed in the treatment of varicose veinsof the legs, in chronic ulcers of those parts where pressureis an important element in the treatment, and may be usedas a substitute for strapping to secure this object. The bandage is then carried upthe limb to the knee with spiral turns, where it is securedby two tapes sewed to the terminal extremity of the band-age, which are passed around the leg and tied. The band-;>ge need not be reversed, as its elasticity allows it to con-form to the shape of the limb.
