In the treatment of swelled testicle the bandage is ap-plied to the testicle by means of recurrent turns not too SPECIAL BANDAGES. 97 firmly made, and secured in place by spiral turns, until thewhole surface of the organ is covered in ; the end of thebandage is secured with tapes tied around the root of thescrotum. The same precaution to apply the bandage soas to make only moderate pressure should also be observedhere. Elastic-webbing Bandage.—This bandage, which iswoven from threads of rubber covered with cotton or silk,has recently been introduced, and possesses all the advan-tages of the rubber bandage as regards elasticity, and hasthe additional advantage that air can circulate through themeshes of the bandage and moisture can evaporate fromthe surface covered by the bandage, so that the skin cov-ered by it does not become bathed in perspiration, as isthe case with the rubber bandage. It is applied in thesame manner and for the same purposes as the rubber Fig. 100.

The patient soon learns to apply ithimself, so as to make the requisite amount of pressure.In the treatment of varicose veins and oedema of the legswe have found it a most satisfactory dressing. 98 BANDAGING. FIXED DRESSINGS, OR HARDENING BANDAGES. For the application of these dressings a variety ofsubstances are used which are incorporated in the meshesof some fabric, such as crinoline or cheese-cloth, or paintedover its surface to give fixity or solidity to the bandage. The materials most commonly used in the preparationof fixed dressings are plaster-of-Paris, starch, silicate ofsodium or potassium, and paraffin. Plaster-of-Paris Dressings. The plaster-of-Paris used for the application of surgicaldressings should be of the same quality as that whichdental surgeons employ in taking casts for teeth—that is,the extra-calcined variety.
