They terminate in the thalamus and subthalamic nucleus,from which new fibers emerge and go through the posterior portion of theposterior limb of the internal capsule to terminate in the sensory area ofthe cortex. The median lemniscus is joined by fibers from the sensorynuclei of the cranial nerves. 2. The cochlear branch of the eighth nerve also sends projectionfibers through the lateral lemniscus to the posterior limb of the internalcapsule, from which fibers go to the cortex of the temporal lobe.
