First American Red Cross food package sent to American prisoners in Germany. The contents of this package have now been hanged and four different packages go forward to American prisoners each "food month." American prisoners now get regular Army food, carefully varied and chosen by the American Red Cross in Switzerland. Food luxuries are thrown in for good measure. In addition clothing of every description is sent to our boys from regular Army outfits to civilian suits. One American prisoner in Germany who has the freedom of Berlin recently was sent a badly-needed "swallow-tail coat" and two golf balls but is not known if the two golf balls sent by a Red Cross Official from his own layout, were cut open by suspicious German "censors"

Packages for prisoners of war and internees. A Red Cross Canteen worker, Miss Mary Dougherty, inspects a Red Cross food package going to an American prisoner of war. Packages like this are sent regularly from International Red Cross headquarters in Geneva to American prisoners of war and interned civilians held by Germany and Italy. One a week goes to each American prisoner of war whose capture and location have been reported and one every two weeks to each interned civilian. Twenty thousand such packages were sent to the Far East on the neutral diplomatic exchange ship Gripsholm last June, together with one million cigarettes and other supplies for American prisoners and internees in Japan, occupied China and the Philippines. Much larger quantities are now on the Gripsholm pending final clearance with the Japanese for her sailing on a second trip

Shown here are the four simple steps in the use of the new lid and metal band closure which will replace the more familiar zinc mason cap--conserving zinc so vitally needed for direct war materials. The Containers Division of the War Production Board (WPB) is encouraging manufacturers to make many millions of these closures available for this year's canning. Jar at the left, having been sterilized, is ready to be filled. Second jar shows the position of the lid immediately after filling, the rubber gasket is placed in between the lid and the mouth of the jar. Third jar: the metal band is screwed on tightly and then slightly loosened and processing begins. After processing is completed, band is tightened again. Jar at the right shows how the band can be removed when the food has thoroughly cooled and the vacuum will hold the lid tightly in place. A truly all-glass package. To open, insert a knife to break vacuum, and lid lifts off easily

The specially modified tiles and instrumentation package will monitor the heating effects of early re-entry boundary layer transition at high mach numbers. These data support analytical modeling and design efforts for both the space shuttles and NASA next-generation spacecraft, the Orion crew exploration vehicle. On the STS-119 mission, Discovery also will carry the S6 truss segment to complete the 361-foot-long backbone of the International Space Station. The first manned lunar landing mission, Apollo 11, launched from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida via the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) developed Saturn V launch vehicle on July 16, 1969 and safely returned to Earth on July 24, 1969. Aboard the space craft were astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, commander; Michael Collins, Command Module (CM) pilot; and Edwin E. (Buzz) Aldrin Jr., Lunar Module (LM) pilot. The CM, piloted by Michael Collins, remained in a parking orbit around the Moon, while the LM, named “Eagle’’, carrying astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin, landed on the Moon in the Sea of Tranquility. During 2½ hours of surface exploration, the crew set up experiments, collected 47 pounds of lunar surface material for analysis back on Earth, planted the U.S. Flag, and left a message for all mankind. In this photograph, Aldrin walks past some rocks, easily carrying scientific equipment experiements, which would have been to heavy too carry on Earth. The two packages made up the Early Apollo Scientific Experiment Package (EASEP) on Apollo 11. On the left is the Passive Seismic Experiment Package (PSEP) and on the right is the Laser Ranging Retroreflector (LRRR). n/a
