As part of the Navy's 218th Birthday celebration, a time capsule commemorating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the chief petty officer rank was sealed at the Navy Memorial. Helping to seal the capsule is retired CHIEF Boatswain Mate (BMC) Elridge McWhorter, 91, who served in the Navy from 1919 to 1945. CHIEF Hull Maintenance Technician (HTC) Mike Blanchard lowers the capsule, containing such items as an original CPO cap device, uniform devices worn by current chiefs and a roster of all chief petty officers currently on active duty
