Nast's cartoon appeared in Harper's Weekly just as a two week-long cold wave and snow fall had finally ended. Before the cold spell began on January 8, temperatures had been unusually mild and people wondered if winter would ever come. Until January 21, temperatures continued to dip into the single digits and the teens throughout the country. Not only was it freezing, but snow covered the entire United States. The weather was so unusual that it prompted a New York Times editorial on January 13, 1886.
