Thomas Brash and Mrs Gladys Mitchell, telephone engineers of the General Post Office, arrive in their small van to reconnect the badly damaged Church House Inn in Stokenham to the telephone network. They are removing cables and equipment from their vehicle in the sunshine. Although three-quarters of a mile inland, the pub received a direct hit from naval shelling carried out during training exercises in preparation for the D-Day Landings.
