4,572 GRT refrigerated cargo steamship Atenas, built in 1909 by Workman, Clark & Co of Belfast for the United Fruit Co. 394 ft o/a x 50.3 ft x 29.1 ft. 1909–14: Under the UK flag as a passenger liner and banana boat between New Orleans and Central American ports and Panama. 1914–17: On the same service under the American flag. 1917–19: United States Naval transport. 1919–35: Sailed mainly out of New Orleans. 1935: Reduced to a cargo ship, upper passenger promenade deck removed. 1935–42: Fruit and freight service on old route. 1942–46: In the service of the US Navy.
