yet tocome. It broke out in full force in the days of Samuel. The Philistines, like the Hebrews, were immigrants inPalestine. The prophet Amos (9. 7) says that Jehovahhad brought the Philistines from Caphtor as he had broughtthe Israelites from Egypt. Now the Philistines, a non-Semitic people, had arrived somewhat earlier, probablyfrom Asia Minor and the Greek islands, and had adoptedthe language of the Canaanites and their customs, exceptcircumcision. They had settled down in that rich sectionof coast land west of the Judaean hills, and, in additionto agriculture, were engaged in mercantile pursuits, theirchief cities lying on the great highway between theEuphrates and the Nile. It would seem that it was thevery same desire that prompted Israel to spread in Canaanthat brought the Philistines into conflict with them. For inpushing their conquests the Philistines would naturallyseek to move along the highway to Damascus and theEuphrates that lay along the coast and the plain of Jezreel.

The story of the fortunes of the ark possesses a uniqueinterest. The sacred object possesses magic power, and, although the spoil of war, really lords it over the Philis-tines. They do not know what to do with it, and in theend are glad to get rid of it. It is just such a story asthe Hebrew would wish to tell to show the sorry plightof the uncircumcised Philistines. We are not told whythe ark was not returned to its original home in Shiloh, and it appears a legitimate conclusion that the reason wasthat the Philistines had destroyed the place. The city isnot mentioned again in subseque
