description

Summary

Built in 1729, the Old South Meeting House was home to the third church in Boston. It was the largest building in town during the American Revolution. On December 16, 1773, as many as 5,000 people squeezed inside to debate a tax on tea. After hours of debate, leaders gave signals for action. About 150 men boarded three ships and emptied 342 chests of tea into the harbor. It is remembered today as the “Boston Tea Party.”
