Summary
Lycurgus, de befaamde Spartaanse wetgever, rechts op de voorgrond. Hij leest uit een boek. Op de achtergrond een marktplein met toeschouwers. Twee honden worden op het marktplein losgelaten. De ene hond eet uit een bak voedsel dat voor hen is klaargezet, de andere hond rent een losgelaten haas achterna. De voorstelling verbeeldt een parabel van Lycurgus. De wetgever wou het belang van opvoeding aantonen en trainde twee honden van hetzelfde nest op een andere manier. De ene hond moest jagen voor zijn eten, terwijl de andere hond altijd werd gevoederd. Als hij de twee honden op het forum van Sparta loslaat, gedragen de honden zich naar hun opvoeding. De parabel komt voor in Plutarchus' Moralia (3:16). De prent heeft een Latijns tekst in de marge met uitleg.
Since the 16th century, Dutch artists used prints to promote their art and access a wider public than what was possible for a single painting. During the Dutch Golden Age, (17th century), Dutch artists perfected the techniques of etching and engraving. The rise of printmaking in the Netherlands is attributed to a connection between Italy and the Netherlands during the 1500s. Together with the large-scale production, it allowed the expanding reach of an artist’s work. Prints were popular as collecting items, so publishing houses commissioned artists to create a drawing or a painting, and then print the work for collectors - similar to what occurs at publishing houses today. Dutch printmaking evolved rapidly, so in 16th-century etching prevailed over the engraving.
