Jacob Huysmans (c. 1633-1696) was a Flemish portrait painter who flourished in England in the second half of the 17th century. He was born in Antwerp around 1633, although the exact date of his birth is uncertain. Huysmans worked primarily in the Baroque style and gained recognition for his portraits of English nobility and royalty. Huysmans moved to England sometime around the Restoration of the English monarchy in 1660. He quickly established himself as a sought-after portraitist, receiving commissions from prominent members of English society. His portraits often featured rich, detailed clothing and elaborate backgrounds, reflecting the opulence of the period. One of his most famous works is the portrait of Barbara Palmer, 1st Duchess of Cleveland, which is in the National Portrait Gallery in London. Huysmans was renowned for his skill in capturing the likeness and personality of his sitters, as well as his ability to convey a sense of grandeur and elegance in his portraits. Huysmans continued to paint portraits for English patrons until his death in 1696. He left a legacy of captivating portraits that provide valuable insights into the aristocracy and culture of late 17th-century England.
