Summary

Carved eagle from the U.S.S. Niagara. The figure weighs 2200 pounds and is made of white pine. She was purchased by a private citizen in 1885 when the ship was sold at public auction. She was returned to the Navy Yard and was carried in the June 17th parade of that year. The Commandant, Louis A. Kimbelsy, had her mounted behind the tennis court where she stood till Commandant William R. Rush removed her in 1917 (or just before) to a pedestal near the bandstand.
