Fossil tooth of C. megalodon, crown and root. One of the largest vertebrate predators of the sea ever to have lived. The fossil record suggests these animals may have grown to at least 59 feet (18 meters) long. These sharks lived 23 to 2.6 million years ago. Megadolon (from Ancient Greek) means "big tooth."
