Reason was that a republican bloc, opposed to allowing the President continued power to devalue the dollar and the Treasury to dip into the $2,000,000,000 stabilization fund, filibustered until midnight, at which time the power was supposed to lapse. Some opinion held that the power could again be granted, even after that time, so Senator Warren R. Austin told reporters that he had a list of 10 Senators who would speak if it held the Senate in session until dawn. The monetary authorization was, as was promised, 'talked to death'

The only school near the Cotton Mills, Winona, Miss. A private school taught by Miss. McIntosh, who for several years off and on has conducted it, charging each pupil only one dollar a month. With only ten pupils now the job is not very lucrative. She said it was discouraging, but that many seemed to appreciate it. "What we need is compulsory education and a free school out here, which we may get before long." Children range from six to ten years. One of the ten year old boys said, "Only two more years and I'll be in the mill." Little girls added, "Four years more and I'll be there." They all seemed to feel they would get into the mill as soon as possible.  Location: Winona, Mississippi.

Mrs. Montemora, Fifty-five years old, is janitress for a large tenement, 133 W. Houston St., (lives Apt. 7) housing 26 families. When not tending the furnace or occupied with other duties for others and her own family, she makes flowers, assisted by her niece Josephine, 12 years old. They both work until 10:00 P.M. frequently. Photo was taken at 2:30 P.M., Feb 2, 1912, a school-day, and their only explanation was, "She just stayed out." Making buds. Several adult men relatives live with them. Twelve year old Selina Wall working at spooling room in the Brazos Valley Cotton Mill, West, Tex. Their Family Record says she was born, March 23, 1901. Her mother said: "She's just taking the place of her sister (fifteen years old). Selina could earn a dollar a day. She was raised up in a cotton mill over in Belton, but she has to stay home and do the cookin." The mother and the fifteen year old girl work regularly in the mill. Several older boys work.
