On January 5, 1904, when the average tem-perature for twenty-four hours was 2 degrees below zero, the percapita use in Maiden increased to 57 gallons, and in Chelsea to 211gallons. In Maiden the increase caused by cold weather was about16 gallons per capita, and in Chelsea 123 gallons. Between thehours of 2 and 4 a.m. on January 5, water was drawn from the pipesin Chelsea at the rate of 192 gallons per day for each inhabitant ofthe city, and in Boston the rate during the same hours was 178gallons per capita. The per capita waste caused by running water to prevent its freez-ing is largest in those districts where houses are of the cheaper class,but which are furnished with all modern conveniences for the use ofwater. The cold-weather waste during the week ending January 9,in Chelsea, Charlestown, East Boston and Somerville, was from 60to 100 gallons per capita; while in Medford, Melrose, Arlingtonand Quincy it ranged from 15 to 20 gallons.
