In a markedly atonic stomach the distension commences in the sinus,the opaque meal collecting there in a half-moon form, while the walls of thebody remain in contact, and the fornix filled with gas preserves a more orless oval form. Gross changes in the contour of the stomach can be observedduring the ingestion of the opaque meal. The benign and the malignanthour-glass stomach differ entirely in filling phenomena from the normalstomach. The Motility of the Stomach.—Definite conclusion as to the motility ofthe stomach can be arrived at from the study of the swaying intensity andform of the peristaltic waves, and the time required for the opaque meal topass, when combined with the information given by the shape, position, andform of the residue remaining in the stomach.
