The first operational aircraft to arrive at Prince Sultan Air Base are KC-135 Stratotankers from the 912th Aerial Refueling Squadron, Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota. Originally assigned at Riyadh, they are here so they can continue to provide air refueling capability in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH (monitoring the no-fly zone over Iraq)

Shown is the parking ramp at Moron Air Base, Spain, being utilized by KC-10 Extenders and KC-135 Stratotankers in support of the AIR EXPEDITIONARY FORCE (AEF) 97-1. Under the AEF concept almost all of the Air Force will be divided into 10 force packages, each with a cross-section of Air Force weapon systems drawn from geographically separated units. These AEF packages will be able to respond within 72 hours of notification of any unexpected contingency

SSGT Douglas and TSGT Goff are two of a four-man civil engineer team from 3rd Civil Engineers, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, deployed to the 16th EOG, a small US Air Force unit located on the French Air Base 25, Istres, whose KC-135 Stratotankers refuel US and NATO jets patrolling the Balkan region.
