McClellan was a brilliant engineer graduate ofWest Point, who had resigned a railway presidencyand surrendered a salary of ten thousand dollarsto enter the military service at the outbreak of thewar. In a series of skirmishes, he had driven scat-tered bands of Confederates out of the mountainsof western Virginia, and secured that region to theUnion.
